Heritage & Ancestry Travel to Ghana

The Year of Return & Beyond

In 2019, Ghana launched the “Year of Return” campaign, marking 400 years since the first enslaved Africans arrived in Jamestown, Virginia. The initiative invited the African diaspora to return to Ghana;  the land of their ancestors.

The success of Year of Return led to the “Beyond the Return” initiative, a permanent program encouraging diaspora engagement with Ghana through investment, tourism, culture, and settlement.

Why Heritage Travel to Ghana Matters

For African Americans, Afro-Caribbeans, and Black Britons, visiting Ghana can be a life-changing, deeply emotional experience. Walking through the slave castles, visiting the “Door of No Return,” and connecting with the land of your ancestors creates a powerful sense of homecoming.

Must-Visit Heritage Sites

  • Cape Coast Castle — The most visited slave castle in Ghana
  • Elmina Castle — The oldest European structure in sub-Saharan Africa
  • W.E.B. DuBois Center for Pan-African Culture — Where the great scholar lived his final years
  • Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum — Honoring Africa’s independence hero
  • Assin Manso Slave River — Where enslaved people took their last bath before being shipped away
  • Panafest & Emancipation Day (held in July/August) — Cultural festival celebrating African identity and unity

DNA & Ancestry Testing in Ghana

Many diaspora travelers are now using DNA testing (through services like AncestryDNA and 23andMe) to trace their roots to specific ethnic groups in Ghana. Some travelers arrange naming ceremonies in their ancestral communities — a beautiful, emotional experience.

Elidel Travel specializes in cultural heritage and ancestry tours. We create deeply meaningful, personalized journeys for diaspora travelers seeking to reconnect with Ghana. Our Cultural Heritage Tour Package includes castle visits, cultural immersions, naming ceremonies, and more. Start your journey home →
